LA-based, indie-rock artist Viola Hutchinson is waving goodbye to a fizzling relationship in her latest single, “The Song You Asked For.” Her most emotional release to date, the track is ripe with regret and unsaid “what ifs.” “Mistakes/The shadow of youth/I am stuck in the shadows with you/Tied to you,” Hutchinson sings, her almost quivering voice accompanied by soft strums. Hutchinson is coming to terms with the idea that her relationship has run its course, but the track is ultimately anchored by the longing for something better. “Street lights look like stars from here/Hope you like this song, my dear/Ask for it and it is here,” Hutchinson sings. By now, the acoustic guitars have exploded into a cacophony of MJ Lenderman-inspired electric distortion that continues through the end as Hutchinson releases a series of angsty ‘oh’s.’ It’s a harrowing but cathartic close that sets the stage for a new chapter in Hutchinson’s life.

While this is only Hutchinson’s 4th release of her career, it’s clear the rising artist has found her niche in dreamy soundscapes with a heavy dose of ‘90s rock. Predecessor “You Always Do” has a similar mellow start before growing into an avalanche of fuzzy strums, while 2024’s “Too Far Again” has a more twinkling, indie-pop feel. No matter in what direction the influences lean, Hutchinson has a knack for creating awe-striking songs with emotional intensity, proving herself an artist worth watching.
