I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Vancouver pop duo, FIONN, and discuss the twins’ newest single, “Mattress on the Floor.” Released via 604 Records, their latest song is all about silver linings amidst the adversities of life. Being released at the perfect time, the sisters share their thoughts on this uplifting song.
Hello! How are you guys doing amidst everything going on in the world?
We're okay, just trying to be creative. We’ve had a lot of time to just sit around and write, which is really nice. We're working on new material and promoting the new stuff that's going to be coming out soon. We've been doing co-writes over Zoom, which is really interesting. It's cool coming up with ideas with other people over Zoom, even when we're not in the same room. It’s been an interesting experience for sure.
How are you guys feeling about your first release of the year, “Mattress on the Floor?”
We are super excited about it. It's one of our more uplifting songs on the EP that we have coming out, so we felt like it was a good time to release it. The world needs uplifting music at the moment. It’s a song about finding silver linings when the situation feels not-so-good and just being able to enjoy it for what it is. We're super happy because it got put on a lot of good playlists on Spotify. We’re super stoked to continue promoting it.
Tell me more about the song and the meaning behind the lyrics.
This was a song I started writing a couple years ago, and I got half of it done, but then I kind of neglected it for a while. I picked it up about a year later and was feeling inspired by my original idea, so I continued it and finished it. It took a while to write and we produced it last year. I was at a point in life where it felt like a rock-bottom. You know when you kind of feel down on yourself and your place in life? Then, I thought that it was actually kind of a good place to be, even though it wasn't what I expected.
Where did the idea for the song come from? Can you credit any musical inspirations?
At the time when we were recording the song, we were really inspired by Lorde’s album, Melodrama. We still love the album, especially the song “Green Light.” For this one, we wanted it to have a similar vibe, but then be our own style at the same time. That was the main musical inspiration for this song.
You guys also just put out a film-like visualizer on YouTube. I absolutely loved it and would love to hear more about the inspiration for that.
Thank you so much! We weren't able to film a music video because of COVID-19, so we just had to come up with something that would still get across the meaning of the song. So we thought, a visualizer. We started combining vintage clips, like hippie and free-spirited sort of clips, with a few modern day ones. We just wanted to find visuals that would portray the emotion that you feel when you're young. You're confused and lost in love but having a great time at the same time. It's like this crazy, confused feeling that I think everybody feels around our age. It's a timeless feeling, I think, that people have felt since the beginning of time. We just wanted it to feel very nostalgic, relatable, and timeless.
What are your plans going into 2020? Any new music we can look forward to?
Absolutely! We are actually releasing an EP in the summer, which we are really excited about. Then, we have another single we're going to release in June. We’re very excited about that one as well. The whole EP will be out by July, so we’re working up to that release.
Anything to share with the readers?
Thank you to anyone supporting our music. We appreciate it so much, all the people that are supportive of us.
