Emerging alt-rock band Hazel released their debut single “Fake Love” on Friday, July 24. The Niagara-based band pays homage to 90’s alternative, with sounds reminiscent of Foo Fighters.

“Fake Love” starts out with a single guitar, building up to the first line. These first few seconds really build an angsty emotion to set the tone of the song. The song opens with the line “You don’t even understand / You got a lot of nerve to ask my family / To take you in / To give you everything.” This frames the upset that is being felt after the actions of someone who has wronged them.

Lead singer Tom Dennis continues on with the line “Waking up at 3 a.m. / To you standing over me / Knife in hand / Stab me in the back and walk away.” I believe that Hazel was trying to set the tone of betrayal that has been experienced in this relationship.

While the band may sound very angry at this person who has betrayed them, we also hear the other side of it when they say, “Take me if you leave / The chain wraps around me when you / Lock away my key / And tear my heart.” This shows that the narrator still feels as though they cannot live without this person, despite the fact that they have been betrayed by them.

The song ends in a fadeout - a similar fashion to how it began. This helps to complete the overall emotion of angst that is throughout the song.

With the release of their debut single, Hazel also released a music video, which can be found on YouTube. Be sure to check this out along with their single.

I definitely see great potential for Hazel being an up and coming band in the alternative scene and am looking forward to hearing what else they have in store for us!
