Here’s to You, Here’s to Me, Here’s to Blossum

Sometimes you hear a song and you can almost feel sunshine flowing through your body. Recently, I've been in search of new music that would give me that visceral feeling of utter happiness. On May 25th, Blossum released their first official single titled “Youth,” and it did just that. “Youth” is about learning who you are and growing at your own pace. The lead singer, Raye Robinson, has always helped me and taught me to not be too hard on myself, and I am incredibly proud of her and the rest of Blossum for putting this idea into music and sharing it with the world.
The song begins with a fading-in, upbeat tempo, which quickly turns into a summery jam. The first verse explores the idea of a flawed relationship that is still happy, ignoring the imperfections and living in the moment with each other. Starting the song this way was so important because typically younger people strive for that perfect fairytale love that is impossible to achieve.
The chorus turns into more of a focus on self-discovery. A lovely line in the chorus is “We can ignore the things they want us to be,” as it is reassuring to know that you do not have to conform to the expectations of others, whether that be family, friends, lovers, or society as a whole.
The second verse refers to taking risks with yourself, highlighting the fact that you are going to make mistakes and that's okay. Experiences and learning are the main part of your youth. Living within a bubble of fear will only hold you back more in the future, and exploration of yourself matters. “I don't wanna live always saying I should have” is one of my favorite lines in the song. You regret everything you don’t do, every moment you skipped past, everything you could've had but never tried.
The bridge is my personal favorite section of the song. It slows down a bit and focuses more on vocals than anything. “Let's stare at the stars and be in love tonight” helps listeners visualize the carelessness and ‘live in the moment’ vibe that the song is trying to put out. Focus on the here and now— it's almost an absurdist view. What you have now matters, and worrying about the future will only end in regret.
If you need a new song to add to your summer playlist, “Youth” is definitely a top pick. From the lighthearted vocals to the upbeat, poppy tempo, this song will always lift your spirits and remind you of better days. Listen to Blossum’s advice and focus on your here and now, because you won't enjoy living saying you should have either. Take risks and explore yourself while you have the time.
