Back after a long hiatus, Hot Chelle Rae has returned with a catchy new single, “I Hate LA.” The trio quickly rose to fame after “Tonight Tonight” blew up in 2011, and they continued to release a few more popular singles after that. In 2015, the group became inactive for some length of time until re-emerging onto social media in late 2018. The band consists of the original lineup, which is Ryan Follesé on vocals, Nash Overstreet on lead guitar, and Jamie Follesé on drums. Now, after four years, we have a new single from the early 2010’s heartthrobs, following the reunion of many other bands such as Jonas Brothers and My Chemical Romance.
The song talks about hating a location following a bad breakup because every person you see in that city reminds you of that person. “It's sunny every day, why can't I get happy?” Ryan Follesé asks. The lead singer talks about disliking this girl because she broke his heart and now the city isn't the same to him. As the song nears the end, he begins to talk about loving the city again since she moved away. Over time, he was able to heal from the breakup — or at least move past it since he doesn’t have to see his ex anymore. The beachy and summery sounds found within the track almost make me feel like this song should have been released in the summer instead of winter.
2019 only seems to be getting better after all these incredible comebacks, and any teenager in the 2010’s can reminisce on the days where the band’s album Whatever was blaring on repeat in their bedroom. “I Hate LA” is a punchy breakup song that incorporates the group’s love for the enjoyable scene in LA. By the end of the track, you’ll see that the group basically hates anything but LA. “I Hate LA” is available wherever you listen to music.
