British pop punk band Creeper released music for the first time in a year just two months before entering the new year, and it is already clear that the band is going to make 2020 theirs with the sophomore album Sex, Death & the Infinite Void coming out in May, as well as their new single “Annabelle.” This single follows “Born Cold,” which was the first song that the band has released since making their reappearance.

“Annabelle” has a very early 2000’s vibe that really fits with the tone of the song and the image of the band. While lead singer Will Gould, did cut his previously long hair, the band still remains true to their ‘emo look’ similar to that of My Chemical Romance. This new song has all of the sounds of fighting social norms and classic teenage/young adult rebellion while still being catchy and fun to listen to. The band has let on that there is, however, a deeper meaning to the song. Back in 2017, the Westboro Baptist Church showed up at Warped Tour in Kansas, and there was a confrontation involving anti-LGBT and anti-rock music protests. Creeper was part of the tour that year and experienced these protests and altercations firsthand. “Annabelle” is considered to be their way of dealing with the situation from 2017 by creating their version of an upbeat and fun satanic song contradicting the infamous church’s beliefs.

The band has also come up with a narrative that goes along with their upcoming album, and each song will have a place in the story. With “Annabelle,” it is the story of the main character, Roe, meeting the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen: Annabelle. The story told in this track fits under both the ‘sex’ and ‘death’ categories from the album’s title. The sex aspect would be the meeting of Roe and Annabelle, while the aspect of death would more so come from the idea surrounding the real-life influence into the story of the track and how it was influenced by a sense of death to traditional ways of doing things and rebelling against these traditions.

Sex, Death & the Infinite Void is set to release on May 22nd, 2020 and will feature both “Born Cold” and “Annabelle.” To keep up with all things Creeper, you can find them on their social media at @creepercultuk or check out their website at www.creepercult.com.
