Ria Mae Reaches for the Stars

Ria Mae, singer/songwriter from Halifax, Nova Scotia (best known for her hit singles such as “Ooh Love” and “Bend”) has made a comeback to release yet another amazing album. Stars is the title of her fourth record. I suppose you can say that the whole album is the universe and the songs are like the stars that make it beautiful and light up the entire solar system.

The title track, opening the record, immediately blew me away, from the backing beats to Ria’s beautiful voice. The song’s chorus is full of harmonies and an infectious melody that is guaranteed to make you want to sing along. What really hit me the most was the lyric, ‘I’m gonna keep on climbing, I’m gonna reach the stars,’ which is an empowering message. This song is about never giving up and feeling so determined about something that you never stop doing it.

The entire album is full of powerful lyrics, and when you actually sit down to listen to them, you become speechless. As an example, a lyric in the sixth track, “It’s You”, that stands out is, ‘I used to be so strong, now I’m mumbling under my breath, did you even hear what I said?’ I can speak for myself and say that I was definitely speechless after hearing those lyrics; I might have even shed a few tears! Ria is a very talented singer/songwriter, but I think anyone who is familiar with her music already knows that.
