Ruby Waters Breaks Genre Definition with "Supernatural"

I suppose the best way to describe Ruby Waters is ‘hidden gem,’ considering she has collected a total of fourteen Twitter followers. I had the privilege of watching the singer grace the stage as an opener for a small show in 2018, and she released her debut single “Sweet Sublime” shortly after, leaving me intrigued and looking forward to whatever she came up with next. Finally, on March 20, her second single, “Supernatural,” became available to the world, and the earworm is something that needs to be shared with everyone.

Including jazz and pop elements morphed into one song, Ruby Waters might be what you got if you crossed pop legends such as Alessia Cara and Maggie Rogers. Her artistry and self-expression is not something that can simply be forgotten. One of the first things that will catch a potential listener’s attention is the two color-popping and abstract single covers. Both are rather unusual in nature, but they display a beautiful art that perfectly captures the imagery that she uses in the songs themselves.

Whereas “Sweet Sublime” falls more into the ballad category, “Supernatural” tackles the topic of an ‘impractical’ love and digs deeper into the mainstream pop genre, all while still featuring her easily identifiable jazzy chords. Despite her amateur nature, this track is astoundingly put together and definitely won’t leave your head after you’ve heard it. Her powerhouse vocals combine with her unique songwriting and excellent instrumentals to create something that can truly only be defined as the Ruby Waters sound.

You can listen to “Supernatural” on any major streaming service now.
