Emily Brophy's New Single is a 2000's Pop Dream
Emily Brophy dreams of making her music expand far past the four walls of her bedroom in Virginia. The young singer is making quite the name for herself in the indie-pop scene online, garnering over 80,000 plays of her first single on Spotify. Brophy is preparing for her second release, “Never Be Enough,” on April 24.
This dreamy pop hit is a complete 180-degree flip from Brophy’s previous release titled “Save Me,” which possessed a sadder feel. With “Never Be Enough,” we are dropped right into a new era of Brophy’s sound fueled by 2000’s pop dreams. Brophy says of the track, ‘I’ve always wanted to write a song that I could have fun with while performing. I wanted something with energy, something that really stuck out, and I really think that “Never Be Enough” is that song.’
Beyond the easy-to-dance-to instrumental, Brophy introduces a reflective mood with her lyrics. Upon first listen, the impact of “Never Be Enough” may not clearly come through. The song overall seems to tell the story of growth and significance of dreaming bigger than oneself, as suggested most clearly in the chorus: ‘If I stay right here, my love / We’ll never be enough.’
At the start of the song, Brophy also sends a message contemplating moving on from the past to new horizons with new people: ‘I need to get away / Out of this place / Away from these faces.’
Brophy’s horizons are broadening as she introduces a spectrum that could appeal to many audiences, from near tear-jerkers to bops with early 2000’s pop influences.
Both “Save Me” and “Never Be Enough” show a duality to the talent of this young artist. Instead of falling into a signature, comfortable sound, Brophy is breaking the mold to create a multifaceted identity as an indie-pop singer. Mixing moods is crucial for a well-rounded sound, whether it be throughout an entire album or through a series of releases. Creating from one perspective with music can become tiresome for both artist and listener. Brophy has proven her capabilities in developing a dynamic that could grow into any genre and any sound she pleases.
Each new release is clear growth for a young, independent artist such as Emily Brophy, a name you should remember. You can listen to “Never Be Enough” on all major streaming platforms starting April 24.
